Internship Opportunities

The Garage Community and Youth Center is pleased to offer a variety of internship experiences aimed at mutually benefitting The Garage and the students we serve and providing meaningful and instructional work experience. The ideal Garage intern is someone with initiative and independence, who is capable of engaging and interacting with middle and high school students to form trusting relationships, and has a heart for students and their families. Bilingual applicants, specifically Spanish-speaking, are highly valued. 

The Garage has three internship periods throughout the year: one in the fall, one in the spring, and one in the summer. Below is a list of different internship opportunities with a rough description of the expectations for Garage interns, as well as deadlines for applications. Garage internships are typically Monday through Thursday, 12-16 hours a week (schedules vary based on the role), with the occasional outlier. Based upon availability, the applicant’s talents and skills, and organizational need, interns may be placed at either our Kennett Square or Avondale location.   

Anyone interested in an internship at The Garage should complete the application below. You will need to include a copy of their resume and a cover letter explaining why you are interested in an internship with The Garage. A professional or faculty letter of recommendation is recommended, but not required. Once received, The Garage will review your application and set up an interview. If you have any questions concerning an internship at The Garage, please email intern@garageyouthcenter.org. Any questions concerning specific academic program requirements should be raised prior to, or at the time of, an interview. Questions concerning specific requirements should also occur in conjunction with a faculty or internship advisor.

  • Education Support Intern

    The Education Support Intern role is best suited for anyone seeking a career in secondary education. The Education Support Intern will assist Garage staff with designing and implementing academic and enrichment programming during our after-school program. Additionally, the Education Support Intern will be assigned a small caseload of targeted Garage students to help students create a customized plan for improving their academic performance. Bilingual applicants are highly encouraged to apply, but not required.

  • Social Work Intern

    The Social Work Intern role is best suited to anyone seeking a career in social work or clinical psychology. The Social Work Intern will be assigned a small caseload of targeted Garage students to build trusting relationships, in an effort to connect students, and their families, to additional resources and services. The Social Work Intern will also work, in tandem, with Garage programming staff to design and implement Self-Care programs which support our students’ mental and emotional health. Bilingual applicants are highly encouraged to apply, but not required.

  • Health and Wellness Intern

    The Health and Wellness Intern role is best suited for someone seeking a career in nutrition, fitness, physical therapy, or food science. The Health and Wellness intern will help The Garage holistically support our students. The Health and Wellness Intern will support The Garage’s diverse programming based upon the intern’s background and interest. Health and Wellness interns could be tasked with creating healthy meals and snacks for Garage students (also, during the summer, The Garage feeds lunch daily). Health and Wellness interns could assist in creating fitness programs for The Garage Body Shop. Health and Wellness interns could also be tasked with creating educational programs instructing students on ways they can improve their mental and physical health.

  • Marketing and Events Intern

    The Marketing and Events Intern role is best suited for someone seeking a career in event planning, communication, marketing, or non-profit administration. The Marketing and Events Intern will help The Garage’s Director of Development with the behind-the-scenes work that it takes to fund and operate a non-profit organization. The Marketing and Events intern will assist with planning and conducting our two large fundraising events (one in the spring and one in the fall). The Marketing and Events Intern will also assist in replying to donors, researching funding opportunities, and connecting with community partners. Lastly, the Marketing and Events intern will assist in maintaining The Garage’s social media presence.

  • Summer Career Compass Intern

    The Career Compass intern role will support the team that plans and conducts The Garage’s summer internship program, Career Compass. The Career Compass Intern will help the team design career and college readiness, life skills, and professional development enrichment programming for the weekly workshops. Also, the Career Compass intern will assist in planning the logistics of transporting students to, and from, their work site.
